The journal ‘Exceptional child: teaching and upbringing’ is a periodical edition founded in 1995 to disseminate knowledge, information, methodology and best practice. Between 1996 and 2012 it was published under the title ‘Defektolohiia’; in 2013 as ‘Defektolohiia. Osoblyva dytyna: navchannia i vykhovannia’; and from 2014 as ‘Osoblyva dytyna: navchannia i vykhovannia’.

The journal publishes research findings by academics, PhD and doctoral students, papers on educational, developmental and rehabilitation strategies in the field of special needs education and special psychology.
Scope: theory, practice and history of special needs pedagogy and special psychology, important issues of inclusive and special education for children with special needs.

Editor-in-Chief: Vyacheslav Zasenko, D.Sc. (Education), professor, associate member of NAES of Ukraine, Director of the Yarmachenko Institute of Special Education and Psychology of the NAES of Ukraine (Ukraine).
The mission of the journal is to serve as information space to promote, share and discuss ideas and approaches to address current issues pertaining to education, development and rehabilitation of children with special needs.
The thematic scope of the journal covers a broad spectrum of issues related to the education and life of children with special needs (deaf children and children with hearing impairments, blind children and children with visual impairments, children with severe language disorders, mental and intellectual disabilities, autism, mobility problems, etc.); strategies and tools for assessment, development, education, intervention and early support for children with SEN; as well as the development of fundamental theoretical principles and curriculum materials to facilitate their inclusion in mainstream education environment.
The intended readers of the journalare academics, graduate, PhD and doctoral students, special education teachers, methodology experts, teachers in higher education, psychologists and child and youth counsellors at special schools, regular school teachers engaged in inclusive education programmes, and parents of children with special needs.
The journal offers an opportunity for scholars to publish and promote their research findings.
The journal adheres to the ethical principles and requirements to research papers in academic publications. It publishes articles that are author’s own, original and that have not been published before.
To enter the global research and information space, the editorial office works to have the journal included into national and international e-libraries, catalogues and scientometric databases.
